Congratulations to Year 13 on a wonderful set of results!

We are very pleased with the excellent A Level results achieved by the students at Durham Johnston in 2024. Our 6th form is large, and we are proud of the personalised support that the school has given to over 170 Year 13 students taking their A level exams this year. They have done tremendously well and have an exciting range of opportunities to look forward to in the months and years ahead. We are thrilled for them.

2024 marks yet another year of excellent academic and personal achievements for the school’s 6th form students and underlines their hard work and determination. It also highlights the support of their families, and the commitment and dedication of their teachers. As a school we are delighted that so many students have achieved such a high level of success and are proud that those studying at Durham Johnston Comprehensive School achieve such consistent success each year. Success is always a very personal thing, and we are proud of their achievements, whether beginning a degree apprenticeship, taking a place on a very competitive university course (140 of our students have accessed places at Oxford or Cambridge since 2009) or starting their first full time employment. We support everyone to succeed on their own terms and are proud of each of our individual students today. They have done wonderfully well and have earned the right to celebrate.

Students have secured university places across the United Kingdom, from Aberdeen to York and in England, Northern Ireland, Scotland and Wales. They are moving on to study a huge range of subjects, from Accounting to Zoology. Additionally, we are delighted for students commencing vocational courses in Adult Nursing, Medicine, Dentistry, Veterinary Medicine, Engineering and Primary Education. This year, continuing a recent pattern, a number of our students will be starting degree apprenticeships with companies such as Nissan and Siemens, as far afield as Germany and, closer to home, training in Law with solicitors based in the North East.

To put the year group’s success in context, 20% of all grades were awarded at A*, with 42% at A*-A and 72% at A*, A or B. This represents exceptional success for our students yet again, highlighting the school’s position as one of the most successful in the region.

Our core values relate to academic excellence for all, the need for students to acquire knowledge, the importance of contributing to society and preparation for future employment, wherever in the world that might be. We also strongly believe that all students should have those opportunities, regardless of background and we are proud to be a comprehensive school, with a large and diverse 6th form. Our students have risen to the challenges set before them, and we wish them all the best as they begin the next stage of their education, training, or employment. Their results are superb, and we are immensely proud of their achievements. Whilst they are leaving us for their next steps, we will continue to offer support, as Durham Johnston will always be their school. Congratulations Year 13 – it has been a pleasure to have you represent the school and you deserve your success.
