Train with us – Initial Teacher Training

As well as striving to provide “a great education in a great comprehensive school” we are committed to training and equipping the teachers of the future, in line with our core values.

Trainees benefit from first class support from Subject Mentors, a strong blend of theoretical and practical training as well as feeling part of the wider school community. All our trainees have gone on to a career in teaching, many of them with us.

We work with the Universities of Durham and Northumbria to host PGCE training placements, but we also offer two routes to train with us directly:

  1. We are part of the Think North East training partnership. Along with four other schools we run a programme through which people can gain Qualified Teaching Status, awarded by the University of Sunderland. You can apply to train within the partnership in general or specify that you’d like to train specifically with us.

You can find out more at the Think North East website at this link.

  1. We are also partnered with Teach First and you can apply to train here as a part of the Durham Johnston SCITT. Find out more at the Teach First Website at this linkWe are currently offering to train in the following subjects, with our experienced and specialist departments:

For anyone interested in training with us we welcome visits; please contact the school at school@durhamjohnston.org.uk marked for the attention of Mr T Patterson.
