Covid-19: Information and Guidance

Parents and carers will be aware that concerns regarding Covid-19 and travel have featured in the press and parliamentary debate this week. Like all public organisations, we are monitoring the situation very carefully and are following the advice and guidance offered by Public Health England/Gov. UK. The guidance offered is very clear regarding those returning from school trips and we will act in accordance with that advice. The Gov.UK advice for schools and educational setting was shared with parents and carers via the school website on Wednesday 26th February and will also be shared via the Friday Bulletin and school App. We will continue to follow the very clear advice given and will update parents if there are any changes to that advice, or in relation to the areas of concern for those who have travelled recently.

House Competition Time

From March 9th 2020 the bins around school will  be used to recycle our waste properly!  We need a poster/digital graphic designing to promote our environmental work!  We would like you to design this for us.

You can use graphics based software, freehand or a combination of design techniques to do this – all designs MUST be original!  Your design will then be used to promote our environmental campaign.  Designs should explain how to use the bins properly (they will be placed above the bins to guide students, as well as appearing on the bulletin etc.).  You might also want to include information on why this is so important!

Deadline is March 4th and house points will be awarded to the winners.

Good luck!

Parent Questionnaire

Recently our Year 9 students were involved in a research project with Sunderland University and other providers.  Students explored the world of VR and modern technology and discussed their ideas for “the home of the future”.

We would be grateful if you could take the time to complete the survey to give the University an insight into how you and your family will use technology in the future.

Durham Johnston Spring Concert - ‘Magic and Mystery’  -  Thursday 26th March 2020

First Half (6.30pm) to include Wind Band, Junior Orchestra, Junior Choir and selected soloists.

Second Half (7.30pm) to include Big Band, Senior Choir, Senior Orchestra, Chamber Choir and selected soloists.

We shall ask everyone who does not have a ticket for the second half to vacate the hall at the end of the first half and then those with tickets for the second half will be admitted in time for the second half to start at about 7.30pm.
Tickets will be £4 (£2 concessions) for each half and please note that these will not be for sale on the door. Payment by cash or cheque, payable to ‘Durham Johnston School’. These will be on sale from Monday 2nd March.

PE Department News

The snow on Monday caused the cancellation of the girls football and league games were also cancelled on Tuesday as Bishop Barrington were unable to field teams.

However on Wednesday our U16 girls' football team did make the journey to Weatherhead High, Wirral to compete in the ESFA national semi-final. We made a shaky start and were unfortunately 2 – 0 behind at half-time. Despite never giving up we couldn’t find a goal against a physical and well organised team eventually losing 2 – 0. Still a great achievement to reach the last 4 schools in the country.

Also on Wednesday our U16 basketball team were at Dame Allan’s competing in the Tyneside cup semi-final. This was our best performance of the season as we played some excellent team basketball to win by 23 points. We now take on St Cuthbert’s in the final on 9th March.

On Thursday our VIth form football team were taking on St Robert’s in the quarter-final of the Tyneside Cup. Despite not being at full strength we produced an excellent performance to win 4 – 0.

Also yesterday our U14 basketball team had reached the last 16 schools in the country and were playing Phillips High School, Manchester. They were a very big and skilful team and despite a good performance we never managed to get within 20 points of them eventually losing 72 – 49.

Today our cross-country teams were at Emmanuel College representing Durham Central at the county championships. It was another outstanding cross-country performance for Durham Johnston as we achieved the following results:

Year 7 boys – 1st and County champions
Year 7 girls – 1st and County champions
Year 8 & 9 boys – 1st and County champions
Year 8 & 9 girls – 1st and County champions
Year 10 & 11 boys – 2nd
Year 10 & 11 girls – 2nd
VIth form – 1st and County champions.

The following won their race to become county champion:
Felix Scott
Evie Peart
Charlotte Dillon
Sam Terry
Erin Keeler-Clarke
Henry Johnson
