This year the house team shifted our focus to “giving back to our local community”. As a large school we have a huge presence within the community and we have the ability to make a positive change for local people. We started this close to home, working with students during Breakfast Club. At times these students need a little bit of extra support within school. Engaging with students in this manner has been rewarding for both them and us. However, this was just the beginning of our giving back journey.
Throughout this we have maintained our link with charities that as a school we have always supported such as Children in Need and Save the Children; through our Christmas jumper and non-uniform days we have managed to donate thousands! Christmas is a time for giving and we have most certainly done that. By working with the toy appeal for young carers we have had the opportunity to provide presents to children who sadly without our donations wouldn’t be as fortunate. This was done on a whole school scale, seeing everyone get involved and contribute to what is a truly amazing cause was great to see.
As some of you may know there are a lot of homeless people in Durham, something so terrible so close to home is something we felt we needed to help change. So we started the shelter packs; we put together a bag full of necessities for those living out in the cold this Christmas including: coats; sleeping bags; food and jumpers and the list went on. We then gave these out locally, being able to help those so much less fortunate than us was something as a team we felt extremely passionate about. Throughout the year we will be continuing to give back to our local community, a community that has supported us as a school from the offset. As a house team and as a community we could not be prouder of what we have achieved so far.
