Mathematics at Durham Johnston Comprehensive School

“Mathematics, rightly viewed, possesses not only truth, but supreme beauty—a beauty cold and austere, like that of sculpture, without appeal to any part of our weaker nature, without the gorgeous trappings of painting or music, yet sublimely pure, and capable of a stern perfection such as only the greatest art can show.”
Bertrand Russell

Through the study of Mathematics, our students learn knowledge and skills that will benefit them throughout their lives. Strong numeracy and problem solving skills are desirable to almost all employers and are applicable to many real life situations. At Durham Johnston we have a strong emphasis on reinforcing basic skills but aim to balance this with developing strong reasoning and analytical skills. Our students are offered support along with stretch and challenge to allow them to achieve to the best of their ability.

KS3 Maths

Our students follow a KS3 curriculum designed to reinforce basic skills while developing effective reasoning skills.

We use www.sparxmaths.com to set much of our homework; this website is also a useful revision tool.

For those students who wish to access extension material, we recommend www.nrich.com.
