Congratulations to Year 13 on excellent results!

2025 marks yet another year of excellent academic and personal achievements for the school’s Sixth Form students, and underlines their hard work and determination. Our Sixth Form is large and comprehensive, and we are proud of the personalised support that the school has given to 179 Year 13 students taking their A level exams this year. They have done extremely well and have an exciting range of opportunities to look forward to in the months and years ahead. We are thrilled for them!

As a school we are delighted that so many students have achieved such a high level of success and are proud that those studying at Durham Johnston Comprehensive School achieve consistent success each year. This success highlights the support of their families and the commitment and dedication of their teachers. Success is always a very personal thing, and we are proud of their achievements, whether beginning a degree apprenticeship, taking a place on a very competitive university course - over 150 of our students have accessed places at Oxford or Cambridge since 2012, including 10 starting courses this year - or starting their first full time employment. We support everyone to succeed on their own terms and are proud of each of our individual students today.

Students have secured university places across the breadth of the United Kingdom, from Aberdeen to York and as far afield as the USA. They are studying a wide range of subjects, from Accountancy to Zoology. Additionally, we are delighted for students commencing vocational courses in Medicine, Dentistry, Engineering, Pharmacy and Primary Education. Several students will be starting degree apprenticeships, continuing a recent pattern. This year our students will be completing apprenticeships in Business Management, Engineering and Law. To put the year group’s success in context, 14% of all grades were awarded at A*, 38% at A*-A and almost 70% of all grades awarded at A*, A or B. This represents another very successful year for our students in our inclusive, comprehensive school.

Our core values relate to academic excellence for all, the need for students to acquire knowledge, the need to contribute to society and preparation for future employment, wherever in the world that might be. We also strongly believe that all students should have those opportunities, regardless of background. As highlighted in our recent Ofsted report, which graded the Sixth Form as Outstanding, "The sixth-form provision is exceptional... This, coupled with expert support from teachers, allows students to achieve exceptionally highly in external examinations, preparing them well for future destinations.”

Our students have risen to the challenges set before them, and we wish them all the best as they begin the next stage of their education, training, or employment. Their results are excellent, and we are immensely proud of their achievements. Whilst they are leaving us for their next steps, we will continue to offer support as Durham Johnston will always be their school. Congratulations Year 13 – it has been a pleasure to have you as part of our school.
