A question which is often asked: ‘What is the point of studying religion?’ It is a question asking to be taken seriously. A serious answer often given is: ‘What would be the result, to a rounded education, to be ignorant of the subject?’ Living as we do in a multi-cultural country and being aware that many religious beliefs are present in our local community makes it an imperative to have a knowledge and understanding of the realities of life for those who are our local, national or international ‘neighbours’.

At Durham Johnston we ask: ‘Who is my neighbour?; ‘What are my neighbour’s beliefs – religious or secular?’; ‘How does belief impact in the way we live as individuals and in community?

Our school motto ‘Sapere aude’ translates ‘Dare to be wise’. It is in this spirit that we enter and engage in a world of diverse religious beliefs and expressions in the hope that we find our questions answered, where answers often demand an ability to digest complex information and where learning is nurtured for a personal and interpersonal journey which, it is anticipated, is likely to stretch well beyond Durham Johnston, Durham and the U.K.

The focus of study in KS3 is the ‘Abrahamic’ religions – Judaism, Christianity and Islam. The purpose of this focus is to help pupils develop a knowledge base relevant to their GCSE study. For GCSE study pupils focus on Judaism and Christianity. GCSE study BEGINS in Year 9.
