Please note that the school will be closed next week and will re-open on Tuesday 2 January 2018.
I wish you a very merry Christmas and all the best for 2018.
This year the message on my Christmas card is an exhortation for us all. 'Christmas is not a date. It is a state of mind. Feed the hungry, clothe the naked, forgive the guilty, welcome the unwanted, care for the ill, love your enemies, and do unto others as you would have done unto you. We do not need to wait until Christmas to do that'. The whole Christmas story sets the scene for the basic Christian message. The shepherds, those on the outside of society, were pivotal to the narrative. Those with other beliefs from Eastern lands shared in the joy, brought gifts, and were treated with respect and dignity. The family was given what little there was by way of accommodation, and were grateful for small mercies. Joseph was put in a difficult position, but carried out his responsibility with a sense of duty and faith.
Those at the Johnston seek to serve the school community in a similar fashion.
All the best this season.
Michael Wardle, Headteacher
Please could students who are going on the ski trip to Serre Chevalier in January remember to hand in their spending money (euros), passports and EHIC cards to me after the Christmas break.
Spending money should be in an envelope sealed with the student's name and the amount of money enclosed written on it. Passports should be handed in separately with the EHIC tucked inside.
Mrs Hopper, Ski-Trip Co-ordinator
Please note that the 2019 ski trip is now full and the students who have paid their deposit have a place on the trip.

All of Year 11 watched the performance of their examination text, ‘A Christmas Carol’, lesson one on Monday. The production company, Ginificent, presented us with an excellent performance and remained faithful to Dickens’ original texts and characters. What a wonderful way to revise and end the year!

Pupils in Years 7 and 8 who participated in last week's Santa Fun Run raised the fantastic sum of £300 for St Cuthbert's Hospice. Each pupils paid £1.00 to participate in this annual event, and we had nearly 300 Santas completing the 1 mile course! House point were awarded for the best dressed runners.

By the time you read this, the Durham Johnston 2017 Carol Service will have taken place. This is the last of many musical engagements that pupils have had this term, and so I would like to take this opportunity to thank all pupils and staff who have been so committed to rehearsals and performances this term. It has been an excellent term and we very much look forward to exploring new repertoire in the post-Christmas season.
Ensemble Rehearsals/ Instrumental Tuition next term
The usual pattern of these begins the first day back.
Congratulations to Matthew Briggs (piano) and Martin Roussev (Guitar) who have both been awarded a distinction for their grade 8 examinations.
This orchestral ensemble, for more advanced young players in the North East, performed a programme of demanding repertoire in the Sage on Saturday and they were ably directed by Mr Edwards, who also teaches orchestra percussion here at school. Congratulations to Roberto Haubold (year 9), Mark Humphries (Year 10), Andrew Hunton (year 12) and Andrew Whitton (Y13) who passed the rigorous audition to join this ensemble.
