Head's Letter to Parents

Christmas is not a time of joy for everyone. Although next week in my message I will remind our community of the hope and joy that spending time with friends and family can bring, I am also reminded of those who are reminded of loss at this time.

As headteacher I not only hear about the times when students win competitions and when families celebrate important times in their lives. I also hear about the loss that families experience, the times when members of our community are seriously ill, and the times when some of our students struggle. Sometimes Christmas reminds families of difficult times or of friends who are no longer with us.

Let us spare a thought for those known to us who may be feeling more 'blue' this Christmas.

Have a good weekend.

Yours sincerely,

Michael Wardle, Headteacher

This week the Year 10 Health and Social group worked with the local charity GOALs - Go Out and Live provides opportunities for people with learning disabilities. The group devised Christmas activities and worked alongside the adults with additional needs. The pupils all had a great time and gained valuable experience which will help them to write future assignments.

North Road Methodist Church Christmas Concert

On Saturday afternoon Chamber Choir and Johnston Brass performed a programme of both sacred and secular music to a very appreciative audience at North Road Methodist Church. The programme also included festive solos from Rachel Lawrence, Jacob Lloyd and Owen Morris.

Durham Music Service String Concert

On Monday after school, in James Hall, The Music Department hosted a performance by Durham First Orchestra and Durham District Orchestra. They performed a mixed programme and were able to incorporate some of the repertoire they are preparing for their performance in The Sage in March. It was excellent to see some of our year 7 and 8 pupils performing in collaboration with pupils from nearly a dozen other schools.

Johnston Brass

On Thursday lunchtime, Johnston Brass helped to add some festive atmosphere to the pupil Christmas Lunch by playing both traditional and modern carols.

Carol Service

Copies of a letter which gives parental permission for pupils to attend the necessary rehearsals in the Cathedral on the morning of the service have been distributed to all pupils in Senior Choir and Senior Orchestra. If you haven’t yet signed and returned the slip at the foot of the letter or have misplaced the letter, please click on the following link to download a copy.

Carol Service Permission Letter

Please do note that pupils in Junior Choir will be singing in the service, but they will not be attending the morning rehearsal, and will travel to the Cathedral with the rest of the school.

PE Department News

Excellent news from last Friday as our U14 girls football team were at home taking on Roundhay School, Leeds in the English Schools cup. We took a 3 – 0 lead and despite a second half fight back we hung on to win 3 – 2 and reach the last 16 schools in the country. After school our Year 7 girls continued that success as they won all their matches easily in the Bishop Auckland 5-a-side tournament to win the competition and reach the finals which take place next week.

On Monday our U14 boys basketball team were at St Cuthbert’s in the English Schools cup. We started well and were leading in the first half but a strong second half performance by St Cuthbert’s saw them beat us. We now need to win our final group game next week and hope other results go our way to progress.

On a busy Tuesday it was the turn of our U14 girls basketball team to play in the English Schools cup. After a slow start we took the lead and never lost it going on to win by 10 points. They remain top of the group with one game to go.

Our Year 9 & 10 netball teams were in league action away at Durham School. Both were exciting, close matches with the Year 9 match ending up 10 – 10 and our Year 10’s losing in the last few seconds 14 – 15.

Also on Tuesday our Year 8 cricket team were at Hetton School for a friendly indoor competition. We competed well in all our games against strong Year 9 teams finishing in 3rd place.

On Wednesday our U14 girls football team were at Biddick in the County Cup. We dominated the game going on to win 8 – 1 and reach the next round.

The netball continued last night as it was the turn of our Year 7 & 8 teams to take on Durham School. Again the standard was high but this time we dominated both games with the Year 7’s winning  15 – 3  and the Year 8’s 31 – 1.

Also last night our Year 8 A & B basketball teams were competing in the Bishop Auckland Schools tournament at Sedgefield. Our A team won all their games to win the competition and our B team also performed very well to finish in 3rd place. The best game of the evening was our A v B team match, as the B team were ahead with only a minute to go before 2 late baskets from the A team saw them secure the win.

Finally thank-you to all those children who took part in our annual Santa Run this afternoon in aid of St Cuthbert’s Hospice. As usual it was an amazing spectacle to see so many children in fancy dress running, walking skipping around the course to raise money for such a good cause.

On behalf of the PE department can I wish everyone a Merry Christmas and Happy New Year and look forward to more sporting success in 2018.

Mr Hopper, Subject Leader for PE
