Welcome to our website. Durham Johnston is a comprehensive school within the family of schools that make up Durham LA. We have a long and proud history, and a strong reputation locally, regionally and nationally, built upon a traditional curriculum which leads to exceptional levels of attainment at both GCSE and A level.
Last year the school was placed in the very top schools nationally in the Sunday Times Good School Guide: we were the 4th best performing (non-selective, non-fee paying) school in the country. Our sixth form is exceptional.
Durham Johnston prides itself on offering a fully rounded educational experience. It is not only in the academic sphere where our students excel. Our commitment to extra-curricular activities is very strong, and we offer our students a very wide range of additional opportunities. Just a quick look at our weekly bulletin where I report to parents about the successes of the week and opportunities for the next few weeks gives you a taste of all that is on offer. Friday Bulletin
Each week our sports teams take part in local and regional games. We have teams for football, basketball, rowing, athletics, cricket, netball and badminton to name but a few; the opportunities here are stunning. Musically, our performances are breath-taking and underline the commitment and hard work of our students. We have junior and senior choirs, junior and senior orchestra, wind band and a chamber choir. We are not only leading the way regionally in classical music: this year, for example, we have worked with the English Folk Dance and Song Society, and there is, of course, the ‘Battle of the Bands’, and we invite the ‘Young Americans’ to work with our students to develop their confidence through producing a show each year. We have an annual public speaking competition, we compete in the Karting championship, regional and national maths challenges, we offer Duke of Edinburgh, Warhammer club, and much, much more. This is a busy and exciting school.
If you are interested in Durham Johnston we offer an open door policy as far as visits are concerned. Prospective parents are invited to contact the school for a visit. We will show parents around the school at any time - behaviour around campus is such that visitors are always welcome. There is of course, the annual Year 6 open evening and a full and extensive programme of induction events.
Please have a look around our website. Accountability is important to us, so you will find a wide range of performance information and our policies should you be interested. We are always seeking to improve, and it is the open and honest appraisal of our own performance which supports us to provide a really exciting educational experience for our youngsters, based on our core values of academic excellence, social justice and global future.
